Out of office message
Leaving one job for another can be a bracing experience. I've switched companies many times since hopping on the high tech express train in 1997 -- usually of my own volition, usually for what seemed 'good' reasons (tyrannical supervisor, chapter 11 woes). But the glow of punting one work environment for another distracted me from the fact that the the new destination wasn't, ultimately, much closer to my heart. Nice Jewish ex-medievalists aren't meant to work in a world of Linux wonks and web geeks and hardware junkies, not to mention shifty sales execs, even if it's taken a shockingly long time to own up to that reality, or at least to try and do something about it. Exactly what that something is remains the big question mark for the next many -- hopefully not so many -- months. For now, however, I'm happy simply to be jumping off the technology express once and for all -- my landing cushioned by support from wife, family and friends; by a mass of inquiries, applications and informational interviews at, for and to local colleges and high schools; by nine months of COBRA; and by what I've come into from my parents. If they were alive, I doubt B & G would be so happy helping fund my adventure, but I'll enjoy watching their cranky shades cluck, carp, critique and grudgingly come around as I wave goodbye to the receding cars, pick up my bundle, and Huck Finn wise light out for the territory ahead.
